What Does TPMS Mean?

TPMS Light on Dash

Modern vehicles typically include numerous systems that keep them functional and safe. Among them is the TPMS. So what does TPMS mean? It stands for ‘Tire Pressure Monitoring System.’ This important system features tire pressure sensors that monitor the air pressure in all four of your vehicle’s tires. If pressure in any tire gets too low, the system’s corresponding dashboard light illuminates, allowing you to add air and resume safe driving in Nampa and elsewhere. Learn more about tire pressure sensors with Dennis Dillon Mazda and take advantage of our tire services whenever you need them, such as inspections and rotations!

Low Tire Pressure Issues

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System light on your dashboard either looks like a flat tire with an exclamation point at its center or says ‘TPMS,’ depending on the make and model. Low tire pressure causes several issues, including fast deterioration because of decreased endurance. Flat tires and even blowouts can result. Other problems include higher fuel consumption due to increased roll resistance, poor traction, and decreased load carrying capacity.

Advantages of Proper Tire Inflation

Keeping your tires at the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) of pressure offers the following benefits:

  • Reduced tread movement to increase tire longevity
  • Less rolling resistance to improve fuel economy
  • Increased water dispersion to lower the risk of hydroplaning, or when your tires cannot grip the road surface and instead roll over a film of water

If your Tire Pressure Monitoring System light illuminates, you can drive to a gas station in Caldwell or the surrounding area and use its tire air machine. You can also take the vehicle to our service department or even utilize a bike pump. If you need to use a bike pump as a quick fix, we still recommend visiting us or a gas station to ensure your tires are filled to capacity. The correct PSI for your make and model is available in your owner’s manual and on the inside of the driver-side door.
